    Description

DEATH AND THE MAIDEN Playbill - Signed by
    GLENN CLOSE
1992. DEATH AND THE MAIDEN by Ariel Dorfman was directed by MIKE NICHOLS and opened on Broadway in March of 1992 for a total run of nearly 200 performances.. The stellar cast included GLENN CLOSE, RICHARD DREYFUSS and GENE HACKMAN. The act of violence that initiates the plot is appalling. But has the real perpetrator returned to face his victim again or has the victim's paranoia disallowed a clear memory of the dreadful circumstances? DEATH AND THE MAIDEN is a mystery of sorts with ambiguity on top of ambiguity right up until the resolution. Well, there is no resolution in the traditional sense. Playwright Ariel Dorfman has left multiple possibilities of outcome reeling in the mind of every audience member even as we exit the theatre. CLOSE may appear guileless but her performance is so intelligent and so nuanced, as is that of her antagonist (Hackman), that almost from moment to moment, the audience is challenged by the changing intangibilities. CLOSE has excelled in thirteen appearances on Broadway since 1974, but never as such a tantalizingly equivocal character as Paulina Salas in DEATH AND THE MAIDEN. The actress has signed boldly in the yellow masthead. Playbill is in very good condition with minimal and minor notes on the back cover and at the bottom of last page. A very minor 3/4" crease at bottom right corner of front cover. Otherwise the Playbill is clean throughout and all pages are present and intact.
